The Kalevala is recognised as an epic while (...) the Acallam is not; the Acallam has epic length but does not qualify on any other grounds. However, what the author of AcS did create -- a long iterative text, tedious and beguiling in turn, repetitive and inconsistent but with sustained passages of brilliance -- has a status as one of the most important narratives from medieval Ireland.
